How we assess condition
A condition is determined by the whole device
A device can be in very neat condition on almost every part, yet still have one clearly visible sign of use. Think of a scratch on a laptop’s housing, damage to a desktop case, or visible signs of use on a monitor stand.
We factor in such damage when assessing the device as a whole. That’s why we don’t look at a single isolated part, but at the overall picture. This means the condition at Hej Refurbished gives as realistic a picture as possible of what you can expect on arrival.
Every condition meets the same technical standard
The condition describes only the cosmetic state of our IT equipment. Regardless of whether a device is offered as Like new, Excellent or Good, it must function properly from a technical standpoint. Equipment is never placed in a lower condition because of technical defects, faults or non-functioning parts.
Condition is about appearance, not technical quality
Our conditions describe the cosmetic state of a device. A device in Good condition may therefore show more visible signs of use than one in Like new condition, but should not function any less well technically because of that condition.
A condition is determined by multiple parties
Before a device arrives with us, its condition is first assessed by an external party. Once the device is with us, it’s assessed twice more, each time by a colleague from a separate department. This means every laptop, desktop, monitor and docking station gets a total of three independent assessments before the final condition is assigned.
When in doubt, we choose the lower condition
Is a device exactly between two conditions? Then we classify it under the lower condition. We’d rather assess too strictly than have a device look worse than expected on arrival.
Too badly damaged? Then we replace the part
If damage no longer fits within the condition in which we can responsibly offer the device, we replace the part concerned wherever technically and practically possible.
So we don’t use a condition label to make excessive damage acceptable after all.
We assess based on the weakest component
A laptop doesn’t get the average of all its parts, but the condition of the part that’s in the worst shape. A single small mark on the screen weighs more heavily than an otherwise flawless housing.
We measure at a 40cm viewing distance
'Light signs of use' is a vague term. That’s why we use a fixed distance: 40 centimetres, roughly how far your eyes are from the screen during normal use.
If you can’t see a mark from that distance, it doesn’t count towards the condition for us. This way, every colleague assesses a device the same way.
We assess from the user’s perspective
We don’t just look at individual scratches or signs of use, but at how the device actually looks during normal use. We assess the visible parts relevant to that device type as a whole.
That last sentence is deliberately broad. For a laptop, for example, you’d look at the screen, keyboard and housing, while for a desktop or docking station different parts are decisive.
Hands-on experience makes our assessment more realistic
Our team works daily with various types of IT equipment, including laptops, desktops, monitors and docking stations. This hands-on experience helps us assess signs of use consistently and choose the condition that best fits the device.
Not every sign of use weighs equally
Not every sign of use has the same effect on the condition. We look at the severity and visibility of damage, and how much it affects the device’s overall appearance.
Multiple small signs of use add up
A single small sign of use hardly affects the condition. If there are several light signs of use spread across the device, together they can lead to a lower condition. The overall picture always remains decisive.
The location of damage makes a difference
We don’t just look at how big damage is, but also where it’s located. A sign of use on a prominently visible part can weigh more heavily than a similar mark on a part that’s barely visible during normal use.

A laptop, desktop, monitor and docking station each have different parts that determine the cosmetic condition. That’s why we tailor the assessment to the device type and the parts that are visible and relevant during normal use.
