2-in-1 laptop Refurbished, laptop and tablet in one
On a 2-in-1 laptop the screen folds all the way round, so you use the same device as a laptop, as a tablet or as a tent on the table. The screen is always a touch screen.
One device, three positions.
How to spot a 2-in-1, when the tablet position really helps and which ThinkPads they are.
By the hinge. On a 2-in-1 the screen turns all the way round until it sits behind the keyboard; on an ordinary laptop it stops at an angle. It is in the name too: at Lenovo that version is called Yoga.
Windows notices by itself that you have folded it over and switches the keyboard off, so you do not type on it by accident. You then get the tablet controls, with a larger keyboard on the screen.
If you actually do something with that tablet position: taking notes in a meeting, pointing at a drawing or a floor plan, signing something off, or reading while lying down. The tent position is pleasant when you are looking at something together and the keyboard is in the way.
If you never fold it over, you are only carrying the extra hinge and a little extra weight. An ordinary laptop with a touchscreen then makes more sense, or no touch at all.
At Lenovo that is the Yoga version. This collection currently holds the X1 Yoga, the X13 Yoga and the X390 Yoga: three compact business models of 13 or 14 inches.
Note the difference from a detachable, where the screen comes away from the keyboard completely. A Yoga stays one piece, so the keyboard is always attached.
Every 2-in-1 has a touchscreen, but not every touchscreen laptop is a 2-in-1. On a 2-in-1 the screen folds all the way round, so you can also hold the device as a tablet or stand it up as a tent.
If you only want to tap and scroll on the screen, that is enough and you should look at laptops with a touchscreen. The hinge of a 2-in-1 does make the device slightly thicker and heavier.
Questions? Answers.
A 2-in-1 laptop is a device you can use as both a laptop and a tablet. There are two variants: a convertible, where the screen turns through 360 degrees, and a detachable, where the screen comes off completely. In tablet mode you control the screen with your fingers or a stylus.
At Lenovo it is in the name: a version that folds over is called Yoga. So the X1 Yoga is the folding version of the X1 Carbon, and the X13 Yoga is the folding version of the X13.
If Yoga is not in the name, the screen goes no further than an angle, even if the device does have a touch screen. If in doubt, look at the hinge: on a 2-in-1 the screen turns all the way round until it sits behind the keyboard.
A convertible has a hinge that turns the screen through 360 degrees, so you can work in laptop, tent, stand or tablet mode. The keyboard stays attached at all times. A detachable has a removable screen that works as a standalone tablet. Detachables are more compact in tablet mode, convertibles are sturdier in use.
Yes, nearly all 2-in-1 laptops have a touchscreen, because it is essential in tablet mode. Most screens also work with an active stylus, which lets you draw or take handwritten notes.
If you only want to touch and not fold the screen over, have a look at touchscreen laptops.
Windows notices by itself. The keyboard and touchpad switch off, so you do not type on them while holding the device. You get a larger keyboard on the screen and the buttons become roomier, so you can hit them with a finger.
The picture rotates as you tilt the device. If you would rather it did not, switch on the rotation lock in the action centre, next to the screen brightness.
For looking at something together without the keyboard getting in the way. You stand the device up like a tent on the table, with the screen towards the other person. Handy in a conversation at a small table or on the train.
The same position is useful for looking at something in the kitchen, or for leaving a manual open while your hands are busy.
Students who take notes on the screen, people who present and turn their screen round, and jobs that combine the office with fieldwork. Creative work where you draw or sketch with a stylus also benefits.
Not sure yet what you are looking for? On choosing a laptop by feature all eight features sit side by side.
Yes, if the device supports a pen. That needs a separate layer in the screen that recognises pressure; it is in the Yoga versions. The screen goes completely flat, so you write on the table rather than against an upright screen.
Without that layer only a simple pen with a rubber tip works, and that writes about as well as your finger. Check per device whether pen support is listed.
A stylus is not compulsory, but it adds a lot, especially for notes, drawings and moving around documents. Check whether the laptop supports an active stylus and whether one is included or has to be bought separately.
A little, yes. The hinge is built more solidly and the screen sits behind glass because you touch it. How much difference it makes varies per model, so compare the weight of the devices you are putting side by side.
In practice it is a small difference you will barely notice in your bag. If you carry it all day, look at screen size instead: 13 inches is considerably lighter than 15.
For the same model with the same processor and the same memory: yes. The folding is in the casing, not in the technology.
What does play a part is the thickness. Thin models have less room to carry heat away, so they hold back sooner during long, heavy work. For office work, video calls and the browser you will notice nothing.
Yes, business 2-in-1 laptops can have the same powerful hardware as ordinary laptops. Flexibility in use has nothing to do with computing power. If you also do graphics work, programming or video editing, choose a model with enough processor and memory.
For a 2-in-1, a size of 12 to 14 inches is the most practical. Smaller is handier in tablet mode and lighter to hold. A larger 15-inch screen works well as a laptop but is less comfortable as a tablet.
The pivot mechanisms and hinges of business 2-in-1 laptops are solidly made. Cheaper consumer models can be more prone to wear. At Hej Refurbished we offer business 2-in-1 laptops that are built for intensive use and have been through a thorough technical check.
