13 inch laptop The lightest choice, just over a kilo

A 13 inch laptop is the size for anyone out and about every day: about 30 by 21 centimetres and often just over a kilo.

The inches refer to the diagonal of the screen: 13.3 inch is 33.8 centimetres corner to corner. The laptop around it is about 30 centimetres wide, 21 deep and around 1.6 thick. That is slightly larger than a sheet of A4 and fits in virtually any bag.

So measure your bag on width and depth rather than inches, because manufacturers have made the screen bezels ever slimmer. A new 14 inch can sit in the chassis of an older 13 inch.

The weight, straight away. Just over a kilo is the difference between a laptop you take with you and one that stays at home. And because this size almost always carries a frugal U processor, you will get a working day out of one charge.

What you give up is screen space and a number pad. Two windows side by side gets cramped at 13 inch, and you enter figures with the row along the top of the keyboard.

Business models out of company lease cycles, with a solid chassis and parts that can be replaced. This size is well available with us, because the travel ranges of the business brands turn up often.

The difference in weight is small, the difference in screen space noticeable. That is why 14 inch is the better choice for most people, and 13 inch the choice if you genuinely travel every day or have little room in your bag.

If you do want room on your desk, pair a 13 inch with an external screen through a docking station. That gives more working space than any laptop can.

Usually between 1.0 and 1.4 kilos. The variation within that range comes from the chassis and the battery: a model with a magnesium frame and a small battery is lightest, while one with a large battery weighs a little more but lasts longer per charge.

For mail, documents and browsing, no. It gets cramped if you want two windows side by side, say a document and a spreadsheet. An external screen on your desk then helps more than a larger laptop, because that way you have light on the road and room at the office.

No, there is no room for one. You use the number row above the keyboard. If you enter a lot of figures, 15 inch or a separate USB number pad is the answer.

This size is strong at that: there is almost always a frugal U processor inside and the screen is small, so less power goes in. With office work you will get a working day. We measure the battery on every machine and replace it where needed before the laptop is dispatched.
